Bosses Strategies

FFIX is full of big bad bosses. Some of them have weaknesses to exploit. So all shall be revealed!

Black Waltz 1 ---- Location: Ice Cavern
HP: 299
Weakness: Fire.
Tactics: The mage'll summon a sealion with 472 HP.Try to get rid of the mage first. Keeping HP levels high is important because Sealion will use a tidal wave attack once the mage goes down. If you trance during this battle, use Tidal Flame if you have it. Two tidal flames took care of both of them for me.

Black Waltz 2 ---- Location: Village of Dali
HP: 1030
Weakness: Wind.
Tactics: Be careful how you use magic here. He'll try to demonstrate the proper way of using some magics when Vivi starts casting. Pummel him with Zidane and Steiner.

Black Waltz 3 ---- Location: Airship
HP: 1120
Weakness: Wind.
Tactics: Let loose with everything you've got on this bad boy! Get Vivi's focused spells and Steiner + Zidane's attacks together and stick it to him. Watch those HP though.

Gizamaluke ---- Location: Gizamaluke's Grotto
HP: 3,175
Weakness: Thunder.
Tactics: If you're using the Ogre, use Zidane's Soul blade to blind him, and get Vivi to focus and use Thunder magic on him. Get Freya jumping and Zidane slashing.

Beatrix ---- Location: Burmecia
HP: 3,630
Weakness: None
Tactics: Difficult. Keep casting your most powerful spells and make sure you've got decent weapons equipped. Most importantly, make Freya jump all the time- she won't be affected by attacks that way. Make sure Quina eats a Vice in Burmecia- get h-im/er to cast magic hammer so Beatrix won't be able to use her special skills so often. Beatrix'll finish the battle with Stock Break, leaving everyone with 1 HP.

Black Waltz 3 ---- Location: South Gate
HP: 1,292
Weakness: None.
Tactics: A walkover. Basic smashing should do it, with a little healing from Dagger.

Ralvuraha ---- Location: Gargan Roo
HP: 2,200
Weakness: None.
Tactics: This can be hard if you haven't levelled up your characters correctly. Dagger should do nothing but curing, while the others slash away to hopefully send this worm crawling away. HP should be your only problem.

Antlion ---- Location: Cleyra Settlement
HP: 3,938
Weakness: Ice
Tactics: Preferably use ice magic, but within reason; Thundaga will do a lot more damage than Blizzard. Use common sense. Have a medicine stock, because its sandstorm attack leaves everyone with only 1 or 2 HP. The desert boots can be rather handy for giving protection.

Beatrix ---- Location: Cleyra Settlement
HP: 4,376
Weakness: None
Tactics: Zidane; slashing. Vivi; casting Slow and strongest attack spells. Freya; Reis' Wind and Jump skills will help a lot. Quina; casting Magic Hammer and healing- Vanish will protect sommeone for a short time so long as they don't get hit by or cast spells. This battle may be hard, but you'll be well rewarded with some of the best eye-candy the game has to offer.

Zorn & Thorn ---- Location: Alexandria u.grnd Chapel
HP:4,896 & 2,984
Weakness:None
Tactics: Pay back time! They think they can hurt Dagger? They're wimps. The only thing you need to know is that they share magic power. Hit the twin who has the power and they'll be forced to transfer it. Now simply do it again. Lather , Rinse, Repeat. :)

Beatrix, again ---- Location: Alexandria Royal room
HP: 5, 709
Weakness: None, again.
Tactics: Crikey. She'll never just go away, will she? Welll, she's pretty powerful. If you're having trouble, the best advice is to equip everyone with their best weapons and let loose with everything, forgetting about MP, equipment stocks, etc.

Ralvuimago ---- Location: Gargan Roo passage
HP: 3,352
Weakness: Ice
Tactics: See above. I-C-E. Vivi wins this battle for you, if he knows Blizzara. Dagger's only use is healing, unless you have Shiva. If it curls up, it's protected from magic, and will return physical damage ten times more powerful. So wait for it to uncurl.

Lani ---- Location: Fossil Roo Entrance
HP: 5,708
Weakness:None
Tactics: Not hard, unless you foolishly chose to battle the invincible, self-healing boss chasing you before. A word of warning; she'll try to kill Dagger nearly every turn. You should not let that happen. It is bad.

Soul Cage ---- Location: Iifa Tree
HP: 5,700
Weakness:None
Tactics: If you want a challenging, rewarding battle, protect yourself with Carbuncle and use Bio on it, and heal often.
Otherwise..............use Life magic. It's undead. Life=Death. :):):):)

Scarlet Hair ---- Location: Madain Sari
HP:6,800
Weakness:None
Tactics: With any luck, you should trance during this one-on-one battle. Unforunately, you'll probably have taken heavy damage by that time. You can only damage him when he's up close. Use items or defend while he's far away. Oh, and equip Zidane well before the battle.

Ark ---- Location: Oeilvert
HP:20,002
Weakness:Wind
Tactics: Well done, you've beaten half the games' bosses. Difficult, especially if your strongest character is Vivi/you took Vivi with you. This place is magic resistant. Use Reis' wind if you have Freya, smashing and throwing with Amarant. There's not much I can say to help you-it's a tough battle and hopefully you'll have taken a healer with you to ease the pain/summon.

Valia Pira ---- Location: Desert Palace
HP:12,119
Weakness:Wind
Tactics: This is relatively easy, provided you collected all the red stones in the building. If not, you're screwed. This thing uses the power of the bloodstones against you. Just add water (Leviathan) and Bio.

Meltigemini ---- Location: Mount Gulug
HP:24,348
Weakness:Fire, Holy
Tactics: Woah! That's...er...unexpected. Okay, hopefully you've got Vaccine(s) to get rid of the Virus, so cast Firaga a lot to waste 'em. Oh, and appearantly Mini sometimes works if you want to get in a few solid blows. And obviously you should heal a lot.

Taharka ---- Location: Ipsen's Castlke
HP:29,186
Weakness: Fire, Wind
Tactics: Bio works rater well, as does Firaga and high grade summons such as Bahamut. I didn't find this guy to be much of a problem, and neither should you. Just try, try again.

Earth Guardian ---- Location: Earth Shrine
HP:20,756
Weakness: Wind, Holy
Tactics: 4 bloody mirrors.....this guy was the first time in the game I got annihilated. Tricky, especially since most people don't train Quina up. Check out the Blue Magic section to find out what you have to eat to learn the skills before going to this boss. Mighty Guard and Magic Hammer, as well as Auto-Life, will be helpful. I was lucky to trance in this battle, but if that isn't going to happen for you put both of them in the back row.

Silver Dragon ---- Location: Pandemonium
HP: 24,055
Weakness: Ice, Wind.
Tactics: I didn't find this guy too hard, just use Ice with Vivi and summon Bahamut/Madeen with your healer. Obviously, Zidane should slash away as should your other physical characters.

Garland ---- Location: Pandemonium
HP:40,728
Weakness: Not likely, mate.
Tactics: He's the big cheese, but underneath all that evil cloak-and-dagger he's an old man. Smash away with your physical characters and if his magic's a problem, shell & reflect (or Carbuncle) should help do away with him.

Kuja ---- Location: Pandemonium
HP: 42,382
Weakness: Hahaha! That's a good one, really!
Tactics: Okay, this is a little harder. The best advice is to smash everything you've got at him. Forget about equipment stocks, lad, just use Ethers and your most powerful Black Magic and Eidolons. Oh, and you'll get a pretty good FMV for your trouble.

Nova Dragon ---- Location: Memoria Portal
HP: 54,940
Weakness: Ice, Wind
Tactics: Make sure you have Vivi, and equip him with the armour that absorbs Wind attacks. I can't remember it's name, but you should have it at this point in the game. Now it's a case of casting Thundaga with Vivi, and using Physical attacks, summons, and especially cures with your other chars.

Maliris ---- Location: Memoria Walkway
HP: 59,497
Weakness: Ice
Tactics: Tricky, this guy. He'll reflect magic back at you, so stick to physical attacks. One of the most annoying things he has is Mustard Bomb. When he hits you with it, just push Triangle to switch chars. If you pull off an attack while you're red, it's instant death for you.

Tiamat ---- Location: Memoria Stairway
HP: 59,494
Weakness: Ice
Tactics: Yargh. Best tips? Erm, ice is good. Get Vivi to blast away with Ice spells. I won this battle with Dagger, because she got a limit break and the third time Bahamut came, he finished this battle off. Just use your best spells and KEEP VIVI ALIVE! One last thing...I've *heard* that there's a chance Odin will work.

Kraken ---- Location: Memoria Ocean
HP: 59,496
Weakness: Thunder
Tactics: The vest you used on the Nova Dragon that absorbed Wind should absorb water, too. Slap it on Vivi and cast away with Thundaga. You had better hope you've got some ethers....the other characters willbe a bit of help, but it's likely they'll get KO'd after a while.

Lich ---- Location: Crystal World Entrance
HP: 59,496
Weakness: Holy, Wind
Tactics: Some people found that Zidane tranced during this battle, so Solution 9 or Grand Lethal solved their problems. If you're not so lucky, then you're just going to have to slug it out. Curing's most important, Madeen will be useful, as will "cover" if you do want to try to trance someone...I can't remeber how I beat him, you'll just haven to do your best.

Deathguise ---- Location: Crystal World
HP: 55,535
Weakness: Fire, Holy
Tactics: *Important- Put everyone in back row!*
First thing it does is cast Meteor...get everyone back up with Life or Pheonix, then Cure them. Then, Vivi should cast Firaga, Zidane / Steiner / Amarant should hack away with physical attacks, Freya should start jumping after casting Reis' Wind. If you have Quina, then use Magic Hammer several times to reduce his special skills.
